Method 1: Heavy-Lift Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo-Lo)
Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo-Lo) is the premier, engineering-led transport method for yachts up to 700 metric tons. Utilizing a heavy-lift vessel’s high-capacity onboard tandem cranes, your yacht is safely hoisted from the water, transferred over the weather deck, and lowered onto a bespoke, custom-engineered steel cradle.
Engineering Benchmarks & Safeguards
- Tandem Crane Sync: Dual ship cranes operate in perfect synchronization to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium throughout the lift.
- Dynamic Load Spreader Bars: Heavy-duty spreader bars and ultra-wide, soft-synthetic slings eliminate hull compression stress entirely.
- Precision Hull Lashing: High-tensile, tension-monitored chains secure the cradle directly to the ocean carrier’s heavy deck plates.
- On-Site Marine Surveyors: Every hoist is visually verified, balanced, and signed off by certified third-party marine superintendents.
Method 2: Float-on/Float-off (Flo-Flo)
For ultra-deep drafts, exceptionally wide beams, and megayachts over 150 feet, Float-on/Float-off (Flo-Flo) is the most natural, stress-free transport solution in the world. Utilizing specialized semi-submersible vessels, the carrier submerges its own deck to turn the ship into a temporary marina, allowing yachts to easily float on and off.
The Submersion & Flo-Flo Process
- Submersion Phase: The carrier floods its ballast tanks, safely submerging its cargo deck to a depth of up to 6 meters.
- Self-Propelled Entry: Yachts sail directly over the underwater cargo bed under their own power, completely eliminating hull stress from lifting cranes.
- Sub-Surface Positioning: Commercial divers guide each yacht over pre-set keel supports mapped to the yacht’s docking plans.
- De-Ballasting Sequence: The carrier pumps out its ballast water, raising the deck dry out of the sea to lock the fleet in place for ocean transit.
Custom-Engineered Steel Cradle Systems
Superyacht hulls are engineered to withstand hydrostatic pressure in the water, not point-load stresses on dry land or ship decks. To prevent structural flexing, hull damage, or cosmetic cracking during ocean swells, Ship Overseas designs, fabricates, and secures bespoke heavy-duty steel cradles for every voyage.
Structural Integration & Safety Protocols
- CAD Hull-Mapping: We acquire your yacht’s original docking plan to map cradle supports directly to internal structural bulkheads and frames.
- Bespoke Steel Welding: Certified marine welders fabricate custom steel uprights, bracing, and dynamic keel beds tailored to your hull’s deadrise.
- Premium Wood & Rubber Cushioning: High-density marine timber and thick neoprene rubber padding prevent cosmetic scratching and absorb hull vibrations.
- Anti-Deflection Engineering: Cradle bases are welded or chained directly to the carrier’s high-tensile weather deck plates to prevent any lateral movement.

Seasonal Yacht Migration Routes
Seasonal yacht migration is the rhythmic, global flow of premium vessels between the world’s most elite cruising grounds. Rather than subjecting high-value yachts to grueling ocean crossings on their own bottoms, owners and captains utilize professional transport carriers to seamlessly bridge the gap between peak charter seasons.
Migration Patterns & Transit Advantages
- The Transatlantic Loop: Timed perfectly with the seasons, carriers move fleets westbound to the Caribbean in autumn, and eastbound back to the Mediterranean in spring.
- Machinery & Lifespan Protection: Shipping saves thousands of valuable marine engine hours, preserves generator life, and eliminates wear on propulsion systems.
- Weather & Route Security: Transport carriers bypass hazardous open-ocean weather states, notorious winter swells, and unpredictable maritime bottlenecks entirely.
- Turnkey Arrival: Your vessel arrives at its destination port pristine, structurally rested, and immediately ready for owner boarding or charter operations.

Superyachts are secured using custom-engineered steel cradle systems designed to match the hull’s exact specifications. Our engineering team maps the cradle’s support pillars directly to your yacht’s internal structural bulkheads and frame points to eliminate point-load stresses. Once the yacht is resting in its custom cradle, the steel framework is welded directly to the high-tensile weather deck of the transport ship, and heavy-duty, tension-monitored lashing chains are secured to robust deck D-rings.
Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo-Lo) utilizes the transport vessel’s high-capacity deck cranes or shore-based heavy-lift cranes to lift the yacht out of the water using specialized spreader bars and soft slings, placing it directly onto its deck cradles.
Float-on/Float-off (Flo-Flo) uses semi-submersible ships. The carrier submerges its cargo deck, allowing yachts to be maneuvered into place by tugs or their own power over pre-submerged cradles. Once aligned by divers, the carrier de-ballasts, raising the deck and the yachts out of the water.
We arrange bespoke marine cargo insurance policies tailored for multi-million dollar hulls, operating under All-Risks terms from prestigious international underwriting syndicates. Coverage options include “Full Cover” (typically calculated at 1.75% of the yacht’s verified valuation) which covers physical damage, theft, and total loss during transit, as well as lower-cost “Total Loss Only” options. Coverage begins the moment the loading sequence commences and remains active until final signed delivery handoff at the destination port.
No, due to international maritime safety regulations (SOLAS) and carrier liability protocols, yacht crew are strictly prohibited from living or staying on board the yacht while the transport vessel is underway. The yacht must be locked and secured. However, we coordinate closely with your captain and crew so they can be present during loading operations to assist with lines and fenders, and meet the vessel at the discharge port to take immediate command upon offloading.
To ensure a safe voyage, owners and crews must complete several critical preparations: drain all holding tanks, reduce fuel levels to 10-15% of capacity, isolate batteries, and secure all interior loose items (artwork, cutlery, and electronics). On deck, bimini tops, tenders, and radars must be retracted or securely lashed. For sailing superyachts, masts may need to be unstepped depending on height clearances and the carrier deck layout. Our marine surveyors conduct a thorough pre-loading inspection to verify compliance.
International yacht transport involves complex customs frameworks. Our in-house customs brokers specialize in superyacht clearances, managing Temporary Admission (TA) procedures for yachts entering the European Union, which allows non-EU flagged vessels to cruise VAT-free for up to 18 months. We handle all export/import declarations, clearing of vessel registration documents, and coordination with local port authorities to guarantee smooth, legal transitions at every terminal.
