US Customs & Export Compliance
Clearing your cargo through the Port of Charleston requires strict adherence to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) export regulations to avoid terminal processing delays or costly staging fines.
Mandatory Export Documentation
- Original Certificate of Title: Must be completely clear of active liens. If a lien exists, an official bank release letter is required.
- Bill of Sale: Itemizing the final purchase price for international valuation declarations.
- Photo ID / Passport Copy: Must perfectly match the legal name listed on the vehicle’s title document.
- EIN or Passport Number: Required for filing the mandatory Electronic Export Information (EEI) with the US government.
For safety and maritime regulations, your vehicle’s fuel tank must be strictly at one-quarter (1/4) tank or less when dropped off at the Port of Charleston terminal. If your vehicle arrives with more than a quarter tank of gas, the terminal operators may turn you away or charge a hefty fee to siphon out the excess fuel.
If you utilize our Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) service, maritime shipping regulations strictly require the vehicle to be completely empty of all personal effects. The only items permitted inside the vehicle are the spare tire, jack, and factory floor mats. Any loose personal belongings left inside the cabin or trunk will be flagged or confiscated by port security at the staging yard.
We regularly ship both running and non-running cargo from the Port of Charleston. However, if your vehicle is a non-runner (it does not start, steer, or brake under its own power), you must notify us in advance. Non-runners require specialized heavy forklift equipment and tow assets at the terminal staging areas, which incurs an additional handling fee.
US Customs will not allow a vehicle with an active lien to clear export out of the country. If your vehicle is financed or leased, you must obtain an official, notarized Lien Release Letter from your lender explicitly authorizing the vehicle to be exported out of the United States. This letter must accompany your original title during the 72-hour customs review phase.
