cars in USA There are many reasons why it is attractive to buy USED vehicles in USA and export them. The USED vehicle car market has always been cheaper for purchasing for the same model vehicle overseas. Not only cheaper, substantially cheaper! Even after import taxes have been calculated for the country of destination, it’s still cheaper.

To most people owning a car is the 2nd most valuable thing next to a home. It is impossible for one to ship their home overseas from USA, but certainly a car can be shipped. A customer would look at what his car would cost in their home country and immediately realize that shipping from USA to their homes overseas is a good financial decision.

Another reason is that USA has so many different makes and models of cars available which are not available overseas. This is good prestige value to people wishing to purchase and own something different from the normal type of vehicles available in their country.

These are some of the upsides to exporting a vehicle from USA. However, some countries have restrictions for importing vehicles. Some countries restrict the importation of older vehicles. Example, Saudi Arabia does not allow import of vehicles that are older than 5 years. There are exceptions to the rule if you are a studying student. Some countries such as Brazil only allow import of New Vehicles and some countries do not allow import at all.

There are many reasons why this is happening. Example is South Africa will not allow USED vehicles to be imported as they protect the Motor Industry of New Car Manufacturers in their country. The likes of Toyota, BMW, Mercedes Benz etc would not be able to sell their new vehicles should the import of the much cheaper cars from the USA be allowed.

It is important to check with your country whether import of a vehicle is permitted before buying and finding yourself at the “wrong end of the stick”. Most countries are lenient and allow import of vehicles.

So where are good places to buy from? This depends on what country you are shipping to. You can always contact us through Facebook and ask what cities you should buy in. It’ll help cut shipping costs. If you want an example of this, read our blog post Buying Cars Online in USA for Nigerians. In addition, if you are not in a rush, you “might” get a better deal if you’re buying a car from the Northeast USA during winter because there are less buyers during cold times.

Here are some websites you can use to find your next car:

  • Enterprise Car Sales – They have fixed pricing. Try and find your car there and then go comparison shopping.
  • Car Max – Similar to Enterprise Car Sales.
  • Auto Trader – They started off as a magazine. Now they are one of the largest auto websites.
  • eBay Motors – There are many people who sell cars here. You can bid or you can Buy it Now.
  • Craigslist – You can buy from individuals and dealerships here.Again, buy close to a port that ships to your country. While you can buy in the middle of USA, it better be a really good deal because the cost of transporting a car to the port can be a lot.

Quick pointer, if you are going to ship your car overseas, you’re going to need to pay the whole car off because it won’t pass US Customs. We recommend that you start converting your used electronics like old smartphones into cash by going to a pawn shop. This can only be done by people in USA, not abroad.

Important info to Ship a Car Overseas:
  • No car can leave USA if it has a lien on it. What does this mean? Your car must be paid in full. The only people who can ship a car overseas and still carry a lien on the car are US Military and Government employees/contractors. For those people a letter of authorization from the lender will need to be issued to pass US Customs. Otherwise the car may be considered stolen.
  • A clear Title of Ownership with no Liens on the Title.
  • If you bought a car new, then your name must be listed on the front of the Title as the registered owner.
  • If the vehicle has been sold, then both the Seller and Buyer have to sign the back of the Title in the spaces as detailed on the back of the Title.
  • For safety reasons, the vehicle cannot have more than a ΒΌ tank of gas.
Import Duty for Destination Country:
  • Import duty is NOT collected by Ship Overseas. It must be paid at the arrival port by whoever is picking up the car. We wrote a blog post about vehicle import duty here. It talks about how to find out import duty for your country.
Travel & Living Abroad:
  • Most countries will allow a traveler to temporarily import their car for up to 6 months. After the 6 months is up, import duty will be charged. For many travelers going to Europe and taking their car, a deposit is paid up front. When the car goes back to it's destination country, the deposit is refunded. If a person has lived in USA for 1 or more years, most countries will allow that person to bring their car back duty free! The car must not have any liens on it. Please check with your Customs Department first.
