Do I have to be present when my car is picked for shipment?

Do you actually need to be present when we pick up your car for shipment? At Shipoverseas, we understand that most of our clients lead very busy lives. If you are shipping your car as part of the process of relocating to another country, as an example, you will be seized with other matters relating to your move. And if you are just shipping your car to friends and family back home from the United States, you will also have other things to do. So, do you have to be present when your car is picked for shipment? That’s a question that we get a lot from people?

What options are there for picking a car?

When you hire our services, you basically have 2 options regarding how your ship is going to get to the port from where it will be shipped. If you have the time, you can drive the car to the port yourself. That’s actually the cheapest option. It means we will not be carrying your car on a truck to its departure port.

The second option involves having us come to your home to collect the vehicle that you wish to ship overseas. This is the option that most people choose, despite the fact that you will end paying a bit more. But why is that the case?

Well, it all has to do with the fact that many people do not really have the time to drive to the port of departure for their vehicles. They would rather have us handle that process on their behalf. But, in the event that you have chosen the second option, do you have to be there when we pick up your car?

You don’t personally need to be there. However, someone acting on your behalf needs to be there.

Please note that you don’t have to personally be there when we pick up your car for shipment. However, someone needs to be there on your behalf. Otherwise, we are not going to be able to carry your vehicle. But why is that the case?

• Before it is picked up, your vehicle will have to be physically inspected. You or your representative needs to be there to note any scratches or other defects that may be on the car. That’s important for insurance purposes. We want to have someone sign off on the correct condition of the car at the time of pickup. Otherwise, there may be issues later on.
• After the inspection, you or your representative will have to sign the driver’s Bill of Lading. Again, that is important. It serves as proof of the vehicle’s condition at the time it was picked up.
• It’s also advisable for you to be there to ask any further questions that you may have regarding the shipment of your car. By the time that we arrive, most of these matters will already have been ironed out. But people usually have an additional one or two outstanding questions. If you have these, feel free to ask the person(s) picking up your car.

 

I am not available. What do I do?

At Shipoverseas, we understand that people lead very busy lives. However, we will not be able to pick up your vehicle if you or your representative is not available. The matters discussed above are important. The vehicle needs to be fully and thoroughly inspected before it is picked up.

Only when you or your representative has signed up on its current condition will it be picked up. That’s an important protection for our customers. It ensures that they are covered in the event that something untoward happens during the process of transporting your car.
