U.S. Import Tariffs Update: What Ship Overseas Clients Need to Know as of August 2025
Why classic vehicle importers must prepare for reciprocal duties
Importing classic vehicles into the United States has become more complex in 2025. U.S. Customs has confirmed that reciprocal duties now apply to all vehicles—including those 25 years and older. While this may not be welcome news for collectors, it does bring clarity. At Overseas Inc, we believe predictability is power—and we’re here to guide you through these changes.
1. Current Tariff Structure for Vehicles Arriving August 2025
As of August 2025, the following tariff rates apply:
Note: Brazil has two possible duty paths. Confirm with your broker at time of booking. Totals may vary by HS code and vehicle classification.
2. What Changed in 2025?
Key updates from U.S. Customs:
- April 9, 2025: Reciprocal duties introduced:
- 10% on UK and EU vehicles
- 15% on Japanese vehicles (implemented later)
- Previously: Importers could bypass reciprocal duties using special customs codes:
- Code 232 → added 25% tariff
- Code 9903.94.04 → reduced Section 232 to 0%
- Code 9903.01.33 → exempted vehicles from reciprocal duties
- July 2025: Customs clarified that Section 232 exemptions no longer override reciprocal duties.
One officer summarized it as: “It’s either one or the other.”
3. What This Means for Importers
- Some importers have received retroactive Duty Advance Notices—including interest and penalties—on vehicles already cleared and sold.
- Customs enforcement is firm: reciprocal duties now apply to all vehicles, including classics.
