We offer weekly sailings from ports in the USA to the United Kingdom

When shipping a car to the UK, the RoRo method is the best if you are only shipping one car and nothing else. Your car must simply be able to drive up and down the ramp of the RoRo Ship without any mechanical help. Absolutely no items are allowed in the car except for the spare tire and jack. If you are shipping 2 or more vehicles to UK, we will probably send it via container ship because it’ll be less expensive. Unlike RoRo, with container ships you can send a maximum of 150 pounds of personal belongings inside the car.

Our shipping vessels depart on a weekly basis from U.S. seaports to to the United Kingdom. We offer several vehicle shipping methods and additional services, to meet all your auto shipping needs to the United Kingdom. Find out more about shipping methods provided by Ship Overseas.

What shipping methods are available at Ship Overseas?

RoRo Shipping

RoRo ships are vessels built for shipping wheeled cargo, more specifically – shipping motor cars and motorcycles. The vehicles are driven on to the ship almost like it was a parking garage. The name Roll-on/Roll-off comes from the fact that vehicles roll-on/roll-off the ramp, which is how they are driven on and off the ship. By contrast, lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) vessels require the vehicles to be lifted by a crane.

Once loaded on the RoRo vessel, each vehicle is tied down securely in its designated spot (as shown in the picture).

This shipping method has proved highly efficient and extremely cost-effective. When compared to container shipping, it has an additional advantage: it provides reliable departure and arrival dates. The ship’s departure and arrival schedule runs almost like an airline flight schedule.

Also, RoRo shipping is the preferred shipping method for new car manufacturers to ship their own vehicles. In addition to the exact departure and arrival dates, RoRo shipping means that all vehicles are tied down below deck. That way, the vehicles have all the protection against external elements.

Shared Container Shipping

With this method, multiple vehicles are loaded into a container at a warehouse. To leave the warehouse for departure, the container must be completely filled with vehicles. This, in turn, doesn’t provide fixed departure dates like the RoRo method does.

However, shared container shipping has its advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness. Firstly, the shipping costs are split among the vehicles loaded into the container. Secondly, this method can sometimes be the only cost-effective method in departure or arrival ports where the RoRo method is not available.

Also, customers are allowed to ship additional items in the truck or the backseat of their vehicle, which is largely thought to be the only real advantage container shipping has compared to RoRo.

Exclusive Container Shipping

As opposed to the shared container, exclusive container means that a vehicle is shipped in an exclusive container; it doesn’t share the container with any other vehicle. This is also a good option if vehicle owners want to ship their personal belongings along with the vehicle. However, exclusive container shipping is the most expensive shipping method, compared to shared container and RoRo shipping.

Both shared and exclusive container methods are used to ship non-operational vehicles because RoRo vessels ship only running vehicles.

Enclosed Auto Shipping – Many of our customers who use an enclosed transport truck ship luxury, exotic, specialty, or vintage cars. Important info to Ship a Car Overseas:
  • No car can leave USA if it has a lien on it. What does this mean? Your car must be paid in full. The only people who can ship a car overseas and still carry a lien on the car are US Military and Government employees/contractors. For those people a letter of authorization from the lender will need to be issued to pass US Customs. Otherwise the car may be considered stolen.
  • A clear Title of Ownership with no Liens on the Title.
  • If you bought a car new, then your name must be listed on the front of the Title as the registered owner.
  • If the vehicle has been sold, then both the Seller and Buyer have to sign the back of the Title in the spaces as detailed on the back of the Title.
  • For safety reasons, the vehicle cannot have more than a ¼ tank of gas.
Travel & Living Abroad:
  • Most countries will allow a traveler to temporarily import their car for up to 6 months. After the 6 months is up, import duty will be charged. For many travelers going to Europe and taking their car, a deposit is paid up front. When the car goes back to it's destination country, the deposit is refunded. If a person has lived in USA for 1 or more years, most countries will allow that person to bring their car back duty free! The car must not have any liens on it. Please check with your Customs Department first.
Import Duty for Destination Country:
  • Import duty is NOT collected by Ship Overseas. It must be paid at the arrival port by whoever is picking up the car. We wrote a blog post about vehicle import duty here. It talks about how to find out import duty for your country.
