How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Car from USA to Sweden?

This depends on many factors. To start, where in the USA will you ship the car from? For example, it’s cheaper to ship from the East Coast than from the West Coast.

Will you be bringing your own car to the port or do you want us to pick it up from your home and bring it to the port? The former is more affordable; the latter is more convenient. If you intend to personally drop off the car and meet us at the departure shipping port, you will have to make your own travel arrangements for getting back home.

Good news, though: this will save you money over us coming to get it from you.

What size vehicle do you have? For example, a compact car is cheaper to ship vs. a large SUV or pickup truck.T

Offering weekly sailings from ports in the USA to Sweden

Our shipping vessels depart on a weekly basis from U.S. seaports to the two main ports in Sweden: Gothenburg and Malmo. To get your car there, we offer two main shipping methods to choose from:

Container Shipping – Cars are placed in a container, either alone or with other cars, and strapped down for shipping.

RoRo Shipping – Short for Roll On, Roll Off, these are vessels meant for shipping wheeled cargo. Vehicles are driven onto the ship via a ramp, sort of like a parking garage.

Keep perusing this guide for more information on these methods and which one would be best for you.

Ship Your Car to Gothenburg

Gothenburg, the second-largest city in Sweden and fifth largest in the Nordic countries, is the capital of the Västra Götaland County. It is located near Kattegat, on the west coast of Sweden, home to one million people in the metro area. Gothenburg is the largest port in the Nordic countries, with more than 11,000 ship visits per year from over 140 destinations worldwide. This is the only Swedish port with the capacity to deal with large, modern container ships.

Ship Your Car to Malmo

Malmö, the largest city of the Swedish county of Skåne County, also happens to be the third largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg. Copenhagen Malmö Port AB operates two ports: one in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen and in Malmö. The ports are located either side of Øresund, which is a busy strait between the two countries. Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns in Scandinavia, and has been a bustling seaport for many years.

Two Types of Shipping Methods

We know how confusing things can get if this is your first time shipping a car to Sweden. There are many advantages to both options, which we will go into more depth here:

RoRo Shipping (Roll On/Roll Off)

Our most popular option, this method is good for shipping motorhomes, campers, trailers, buses, construction vehicles, and boats. However, vehicles using this method must be able to make it up and down the ramp on their own power without any assistance. Additionally, this method is affordable and convenient, best for wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles and cars.
Once boarded onto the ship, your vehicle will be securely tied down in a designated spot. This happens to be a highly efficient and cost-effective option, something many new car manufacturers choose when looking to ship their own vehicles. RoRo shipping offer secure tie-down with no exposure to the ocean for optimal protection against external elements.

Choose this method when shipping a single vehicle to Sweden, when you want a predictable departure date, and when your car is in good working order.

Container Shipping

Another way to ship a car from the USA to Sweden is via container. Under this umbrella term, there are two further categories: shared and exclusive container shipping. Here are the details on each.

Shared Container Shipping

This is just like it sounds: your car shares a container with other people’s cars. Each container fits about four vehicles. You are also allowed to ship additional items in the trunk or the backseat of your vehicle, a big advantage over RoRo, where you cannot do this. With shared containers, you can also ship vehicles that do not work. For example, those who buy classic cars in the USA that need repair often choose shared container shipping when shipping to Sweden.

Now for the disadvantages: Each container must be filled with vehicles in order for it to be loaded onto the container ship and to set sail. This means you can’t be guaranteed of a fixed departure date like you are with the RoRo method.

This makes it more difficult to plan, as you could be waiting an extra week until the container is filled with the rest of the vehicles. Thus, you would be best off choosing this method when shipping two or more vehicles.

Exclusive Container Shipping

If you own exotic vehicles like Bentleys, Ferraris, Aston Martins, etc.to ship and want added peace of mind knowing your car will get personalized attention, choose this option. You’ll pay more, but you get the convenience. Just as with shared containers, you are allowed to ship personal belongings along with your car.

As with shared container shipping, you can ship vehicles that do not work. This option gives you more space and peace of mind knowing your car is the only one in the container.

As we said above, you have two main options to explore. Either bring it to us or we come get it from you.

Open and Enclosed Auto Shipping

Sometimes it’s just more convenient for us to pick up the car from your location and deliver it to the port for you, using either open or enclosed auto shipping.

Open Auto Shipping – This is the most common car shipping method as well as the one that won’t cost you a lot. Our transport trucks can hold nine or 10 cars at a time and as few as five cars. The transport truck driver will load and unload vehicles, filling these transport trucks to full capacity. It’s a safe and cost effective way to ship vehicles like sedans and minivans.

That’s because you get a lower shipping cost because you’re sharing that cost with the other cars on board.

Enclosed Auto Shipping – This is more expensive for a few reasons: your vehicle is shipped with only two other vehicles. Also, it is placed onto the truck via a special ramp or lift-gate and it is not exposed to the elements for the ride.Yes, you will pay more but it’s a safer way to transport your luxury, exotic, specialty, or vintage cars. Higher price tag, lower risk.

We think yes. It’s always smart to protect your investment, especially if you can’t afford to pay out of pocket for any unfortunate repairs, damage or loss to your vehicle (and who can?). We strongly suggest you buy the optional Marine Insurance. We offer FULL COVERAGE Marine Insurance against Loss or Damage from the time your car is loaded onto the ship. The cost is 1.75% of the value you wish to insure the car for.

Of course, the chance of something unfortunate happening to your car is low, where the only time it would pose a possibility being during hurricane season (it lasts from June till November). Learn more about Marine Insurance by clicking on the link below.
