Ship your Car to Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, officially Santo Domingo de Guzmán, is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean by population. In 2010, its population was counted as 965,040, rising to 2,908,607 when its surrounding metropolitan area was included. The city is coterminous with the boundaries of the Distrito Nacional (“D.N.”, “National District”), itself bordered on three sides by Santo Domingo Province. Founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, on the east bank of the Ozama River and then moved by Nicolás de Ovando in 1502 to the west bank of the river, the city is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial rule in the New World. Santo Domingo is the site of the first university, cathedral, castle, monastery, and fortress in the New World. The city’s Colonial Zone was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Santo Domingo was called Ciudad Trujillo (Spanish pronunciation: [sjuˈðað tɾuˈxiʝo]), from 1936 to 1961, after the Dominican Republic’s dictator, Rafael Trujillo, named the capital after himself. Following his assassination, the city resumed its original designation.

Shipping Methods to Santo Domingo

RoRo Shipping – RoRo ships are vessels built for shipping wheeled cargo, more specifically – shipping cars and motorcycles. The vehicles are driven on to the ship as if it were a floating parking garage.

RoRo ships are vessels built for shipping wheeled cargo, more specifically – shipping motor cars and motorcycles. The vehicles are driven on to the ship almost like it was a parking garage. The name Roll-on/Roll-off comes from the fact that vehicles roll-on/roll-off the ramp, which is how they are driven on and off the ship. By contrast, lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) vessels require the vehicles to be lifted by a crane. Once loaded on the RoRo vessel, each vehicle is tied down securely in its designated spot (as shown in the picture).

Container Shipping – Container shipping means that a vehicle is shipped in a container; there is also the option to select an Exclusive Container. With this method, multiple vehicles are loaded into a container at a warehouse. To leave the warehouse for departure, the container must be completely filled with vehicles. This, in turn, doesn’t provide fixed departure dates like the RoRo method does. However, shared container shipping has its advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness. Firstly, the shipping costs are split among the vehicles loaded into the container. Secondly, this method can sometimes be the only cost-effective method in departure or arrival ports where the RoRo method is not available.

The documents you will need are:

  • The original Certificate of Title of Ownership of the vehicle without a Lien recorded on the Title. If the vehicle is used or pre-owned the existing Certificate of Title can be endorsed by the seller to the new owner. No Sales Tax is payable to the Seller and proof of export will be given to the Seller if requested. Depending on which Port the vehicle will sail from, you may need a Bill of Sale or a Notarized Bill of Sale.
  • If you are in the Military, Government or State service and there is a Lien recorded on the vehicle, the Lien Holder needs to give permission to export the vehicle. This permission must be an Original Letter from the Lien holder together with 3 certified copies of the Certificate of Title. You will also need to present your Military orders or a letter from the Government or State authority and a copy of the Title Record History obtainable from the Department of Motor Vehicles in the State the vehicle is registered.
  • When a new vehicle is purchased, an Original Certificate of Origin must be obtained from the Dealership who sold you the vehicle. we need this to get Custom Clearance. Car Shipping Reviews
Important info to Ship a Car Overseas:
  • No car can leave USA if it has a lien on it. What does this mean? Your car must be paid in full. The only people who can ship a car overseas and still carry a lien on the car are US Military and Government employees/contractors. For those people a letter of authorization from the lender will need to be issued to pass US Customs. Otherwise the car may be considered stolen.
  • A clear Title of Ownership with no Liens on the Title.
  • If you bought a car new, then your name must be listed on the front of the Title as the registered owner.
  • If the vehicle has been sold, then both the Seller and Buyer have to sign the back of the Title in the spaces as detailed on the back of the Title.
  • For safety reasons, the vehicle cannot have more than a ¼ tank of gas.
Import Duty for Destination Country:
  • Import duty is NOT collected by Ship Overseas. It must be paid at the arrival port by whoever is picking up the car. We wrote a blog post about vehicle import duty here. It talks about how to find out import duty for your country.
Travel & Living Abroad:
  • Most countries will allow a traveler to temporarily import their car for up to 6 months. After the 6 months is up, import duty will be charged. For many travelers going to Europe and taking their car, a deposit is paid up front. When the car goes back to it's destination country, the deposit is refunded. If a person has lived in USA for 1 or more years, most countries will allow that person to bring their car back duty free! The car must not have any liens on it. Please check with your Customs Department first.
