Shipping Methods

The Ship Overseas Inc. team specializes in shipping cars, motorcycles, RVs, trailers as well as a variety of other vehicles overseas to your destination country. Ship Overseas Inc. has a commitment to excellence. We keep only the highest quality shipping partners. Every country presents a pathway for success when it comes to shipping your vehicle overseas. When working with Ship Overseas Inc. to ship your vehicle overseas, we offer a variety of overseas shipping option to alleviate any shipping challenges. Let’s set sail with our sights on a successful overseas shipping process. Come explore the shipping methods we have available:

RoRo Shipping

RoRo ships are vessels built for shipping wheeled cargo, more specifically – shipping motor cars and motorcycles. The vehicles are driven on to the ship almost like it was a parking garage. The name Roll-on/Roll-off comes from the fact that vehicles roll-on/roll-off the ramp, which is how they are driven on and off the ship. By contrast, lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) vessels require the vehicles to be lifted by a crane.Once loaded on the RoRo vessel, each vehicle is tied down securely in its designated spot (as shown in the picture).

This shipping method has proved highly efficient and extremely cost-effective. When compared to container shipping, it has an additional advantage: it provides reliable departure and arrival dates. The ship’s departure and arrival schedule runs almost like an airline flight schedule.

Also, RoRo shipping is the preferred shipping method for new car manufacturers to ship their own vehicles. In addition to the exact departure and arrival dates, RoRo shipping means that all vehicles are tied down below deck. That way, the vehicles have all the protection against external elements.

Shared Container Shipping

With this method, multiple vehicles are loaded into a container at a warehouse. To leave the warehouse for departure, the container must be completely filled with vehicles. This, in turn, doesn’t provide fixed departure dates like the RoRo method does. However, shared container shipping has its advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness. Firstly, the shipping costs are split among the vehicles loaded into the container. Secondly, this method can sometimes be the only cost-effective method in departure or arrival ports where the RoRo method is not available.

Also, customers are allowed to ship additional items in the truck or the backseat of their vehicle, which is largely thought to be the only real advantage container shipping has compared to RoRo. Read more about how you can save when shipping multiple cars overseas.

Exclusive Container Shipping
As opposed to the shared container, exclusive container means that a vehicle is shipped in an exclusive container; it doesn’t share the container with any other vehicle. This is also a good option if vehicle owners want to ship their personal belongings along with the vehicle. However, exclusive container shipping is the most expensive shipping method, compared to shared container and RoRo shipping.
Both shared and exclusive container methods are used to ship non-operational vehicles because RoRo vessels ship only running vehicles.
Open and Enclosed Auto Shipping

Ship Overseas, offers the convenience to transport your vehicle to the port, if you are unable to drive your car to the port yourself. Having one company deal with both the transport to the port and the shipping is a good move, since you won’t have to deal with different agents. What’s more, Ship Overseas with a proven track record has the experience and practical know-how to handle all phases of your car shipping, including its transport to the port.We offer open and enclosed auto shipping to pick from your location and deliver it to the port.

Open Auto Shipping – This is the most common type of car shipping method in the U.S. Generally, it is also the least expensive! This car shipping method is widely used for shipping vehicles like sedans and minivans. Many car manufacturers use the open auto shipping method simply to reduce costs. It is a safe and cost effective method.

Our transport trucks normally carry as many as 9-10 cars at a time and as few as 5 cars. The transport truck driver will load and unload vehicles while shipping cars across country. In addition, since we are able to fill these transport trucks to full capacity, it lowers the over all shipping costs when running routes across the U.S.

Enclosed Auto Shipping – Many of our customers who use an enclosed transport truck ship luxury, exotic, specialty, or vintage cars. The cost of this shipping method is higher, but the risk factor is greatly reduced. By using this car shipping method, the vehicle will not be exposed to the elements. Shipping a car to the port using enclosed car shipping is ideal if a person has a slightly higher budget. The car will normally be shipped along with 2 couple other vehicles. A special ramp or lift-gate is used to get the cars into the transport truck. You can expect to have peace-of-mind when using the enclosed car shipping method.

Marine Insurance
Ship Overseas recommends that all shipments be insured for transit cargo insurance (marine insurance) on a first dollar basis for losses incurring in transit. We offer FULL COVER Marine Insurance against Loss or Damage from the time your vehicle is loaded onto the Vessel for shipment at a rate of 1.75% of the value you wish to Insure for.

Important info to Ship a Car Overseas:
  • No car can leave USA if it has a lien on it. What does this mean? Your car must be paid in full. The only people who can ship a car overseas and still carry a lien on the car are US Military and Government employees/contractors. For those people a letter of authorization from the lender will need to be issued to pass US Customs. Otherwise the car may be considered stolen.
  • A clear Title of Ownership with no Liens on the Title.
  • If you bought a car new, then your name must be listed on the front of the Title as the registered owner.
  • If the vehicle has been sold, then both the Seller and Buyer have to sign the back of the Title in the spaces as detailed on the back of the Title.
  • For safety reasons, the vehicle cannot have more than a ¼ tank of gas.
Travel & Living Abroad:
  • Most countries will allow a traveler to temporarily import their car for up to 6 months. After the 6 months is up, import duty will be charged. For many travelers going to Europe and taking their car, a deposit is paid up front. When the car goes back to it’s destination country, the deposit is refunded. If a person has lived in USA for 1 or more years, most countries will allow that person to bring their car back duty free! The car must not have any liens on it. Please check with your Customs Department first.
Import Duty for Destination Country:
  • Import duty is NOT collected by Ship Overseas. It must be paid at the arrival port by whoever is picking up the car. We wrote a blog post about vehicle import duty here. It talks about how to find out import duty for your country.
