How to Prepare a Car for Shipping Overseas

Once you have received a quote from us to get your car from one port to another, you can set up the pick-up date at your location and make a payment. Next, it’s time to prepare your car for the trip. Remove all personal possessions from the vehicle. Clean it up, vacuum the inside, have it detailed: whatever you need to do to ensure it is clean and ready for the trip – especially if this involves a sale for pickup by the seller at the destination port.

If you are shipping your own car overseas for your own use later, you can pack personal goods inside the vehicle IF you are choosing to ship it in a shared container. This saves space so you don’t have to use as much luggage. Just keep in mind, you’re shipping those goods at your own risk. They are not insured.

If you are using an exclusive container to send your car on its own, you can pack the vehicle and the container with all your belongings and opt for insurance against loss (but not damage). You must declare or disclose certain items or you could be fined when going through U.S. Customs and destination Customs.

It’s wise to include an itemized packing list of the goods you pack in each box. Keep a tally of the boxes and the value of all contents. Include the last six digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN) and attach the itemized list to the original Title of Ownership. You will have to get a signature at the terminal upon delivery.

If you’re going with RoRo shipping (short for roll on, roll off), you cannot pack any personal possessions in your vehicle. You should remove your license plates and registration tags at vehicle drop-off before departing the port or before the trucking company picks up your vehicle at your door. You can always replace them when picking up your car at the destination port. These rules are in place for your own protection.

In order to ship a car overseas, you need a clear Title of Ownership with no liens on the title. If you bought the vehicle new, your name must be listed on the front of the title as the registered owner. If the car has been sold, both the buyer and seller must sign the back of the title.
