                                                                          Shipping a Car to Kenya

For over 25 years, we have been shipping cars to Mombasa, Kenya from America. We are an International Car Shipping Company based in USA. Shipping a car to Kenya from USA is a routine and simple process. We have several departure ports in USA to ship your car from. We found this keeps the shipping cost down and it is better for the consumer in the end. Shipping a car to Kenya can be done in a Container or a Roll on Roll off vessel. Roll on Roll off (RoRo) is far more popular to Kenya because it is cheaper and the arrival time is usually quicker. We will cover the advantages of RoRo and Container Shipping in a bit.

If your car is far from one of the departure ports destined for Kenya and can't deliver it to the port, then we can arrange one of our transport trucks to meet you or the designated person. This becomes affordable for customers to purchase their vehicles throughout the United States and have them trucked at reasonable prices to the departure port.

PLEASE NOTE: There are no vehicle age restrictions when shipping a car through Kenya and it's being forwarded to another country. Mombasa is very popular port to forward cars to surrounding African countries. Kenya normally allows vehicles that are 8 years or younger to be imported. To be extra sure of the latest age vehicle restrictions, CALL the Kenya Revenue Authority in the box next to the map below.

The image to the left is of a RoRo ship. Use this car shipping method if only one or two cars needs to be shipped. Nothing can be inside the car the trunk except for the jack and spare tire. Since there is a ramp, the car must be able to drive up and down without any mechanical assistance. Once the car is aboard the ship it is strapped to the ship's deck to prevent it from moving. All ships will rock while out to sea. Read our blog post regarding purchasing marine insurance.

shipping car to Kenya via container Container Shipments
An exclusive or shared container can be used to ship a car to Kenya. By using an exclusive container, only your cars and belongings are packed in the container. If you don't mind a shared container shipment, you share the container with other cars that are being shipped from the USA to Mombasa, Kenya.

While many of our container shipping lines share the same departure ports as our RoRo ships, not all departure terminal ports are available for container shipping.

Container shipments are available whereby you may load personal goods in the car you are shipping. Since this means a person would be shipping more stuff, it is normally more expensive than Roll on Roll off shipping. If a person decides to pack personal belongings in the car, a packing list of the goods and the values will be needed. The packing list must itemize the goods by category. As with Roll on Roll of shipments, we will need a clear Title of Ownership with no liens on the Title.

If you bought a brand new car, your name must be on the Title as the registered owner. Both the seller and buyer have to sign the back of the Title in the spaces provided if the car was previously sold. US Customs requires this to be able to export the car.

For Roll on Roll off & Container shipments to Kenya you will need:

  • A clear Title of Ownership with no Liens on the Title
  • If a new car was purchased, then the name must be listed on the front of the Title as the registered owner. If the vehicle has been sold, then, both the Seller and Buyer have to sign the spaces on the back of the Title. This is a requirement for US Customs to be able to export the car.
  • The car must run, drive and have brakes to be shipped on our RoRo ship. No goods are permitted in the vehicle except the jack, spare tire and tools that came with the car when it was new.
  • Destination clearing agents are provided to assist the customer in clearing and registering the car in Kenya. For safety reasons, the vehicle cannot have more than a ¼ tank of gas.
  • If the car does not run, drive, brake or if there are goods packed in the vehicle, then it will have to be shipped in a container.
  • We do offer Marine Insurance to protect the car from any loss or damage while sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.
